The 2010 BMC Grand Prix calendar has some familiar and some new venues.
All events will be paced, and the ‘A’ races will be aimed at championship qualification. Prize money of up to £1000 will again be offered based on place and performance.
The series will again be part of the UKA McCain Challenge Series.
Certain races will be designated as international races, and in these we will particularly aim to have a high class international overseas entry.
Leading UK competitors will receive an invite for these races.
The first two fixtures are before the UK trials for the European Championships and we will be aiming for high quality events.
For the 29th May event at Sport City we will have selected international races depending on the interest from UK competitors.
At the Watford meeting on 12th June the 800m and 1500m races for both men and women will be international races and the longer distances will also be targeted as quality races.
The Sports City women’s 5000m will host the UKA U20 women’s trial race. Invitations to this will be handled by UK Athletics.
The remaining three fixtures are after the European trials but qualification will still be a main aim with the Commonwealth Games taking place later in the year.
Solihull has always been a popular venue and we are pleased to return there on the 10th July.
It was the last of our venues to be confirmed as we needed to satisfy ourselves that we would have an adequate number of officials, due to the English Schools being at Birmingham on the same weekend.
On the 24th July we will stage our first ever Grand Prix meeting in Northern Ireland. We are putting on this meeting with backing from Northern Ireland Athletics and in partnership with our friends in the Irish Milers Club who expect to bring a large contingent.
The venue will be the Mary Peters track which is a sheltered track good for fast times. We are putting together a package for people travelling from the mainland with the aim of making it a value for money weekend.
Details of this will be announced in due course.
Last year the BMC staged the fastest men’s 10,000m in Britain and we have given this year’s equivalent race Grand Prix status with prize money to be offered. It will be held at Tipton on the 14th August.
On the 28th August we will hold the BMC Grand Prix final at Cardiff in conjunction with the McCain UK Challenge final. Last seasons final at this venue produced some great times 1:47 / 3:41 / 2:01 / 4:10 / 13:34 / 8:50 and hopefully we will see more of the same this year.
