Learn about vulnerability factors that can impact mental health. Hear athletes share their stories of how they have overcome personal challenges, with sign-posting to support services.
Studies show that the prevalence of anxiety and depression among current elite athletes ranges from 26% to 34%1 2 4 5. Injured athletes report higher levels compared to non-injured athletes3 5 10. And yet so often athletes suffer in silence.
Following the tragic death of Robbie Fitzgibbon, the BMC and its members are committed to opening up the essential conversation around this topic.
Throughout November we will be running a series of webinars and instagram lives addressing the topic with expertise and through the lived experiences of athletes, coaches and practitioners.
We will be kicking off the series here with a BMC athlete panel supported by clinical psychologist, Dr Rachel Burgon, who will explain how certain vulnerability factors can negatively impact mental health. The athletes will then share their personal stories of how they have overcome challenges, and what they now do to maintain their mental health. Further sign-posting to support services will be offered by Steph Twell, Chair of UKA Athlete Commission.
Further information on the panelists:
Phoebe Gill: Olympian and U18 European Record Holder
Steph Twell: Olympian and 8 x major medallist
Jamie Webb: 2 x European Indoor 800m medallist
Josh Blevins: Junior international cross-country runner
Dr Rachel Burgon: a clinical psychologist that specialises in supporting athletes, with published research on eating disorders in sport.
The webinar will be hosted by junior international athlete, Oakley Denson, who approached the BMC to suggest running the webinar.
In the following weeks, we will be running 30min instagram lives on Friday evening with coaches, physios and parents. Keep an eye on our social media for announcements.
The sessions will be free for all to attend, but we will be requesting donations to Mind via Robbie’s sponsorship page for the Brighton marathon. His dad will now be running in his place and memory next year.
